Voices

Some of my best memories of baseball lie specificaly with the voices of the game. Yearly I get a membership to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Every month they send out their Memories and Dreams magazine. It highlights all aspects of the game and is a joy to read.
memories and dreams.jpg One of the reacurring themes involves the voices of the game. I know the history that surrounds those voices and I understood that those abettors brought the game to everyones home. The Cardinal game just finished on MLBtv and I noticed the only other game on this afternoon was the Dodger Braves game. I normaly never listen/watch the Dodgers but I put it on anyway.

vin scully.jpg The first thing I heard was Vin Scullys voice. I was immediately struck with age regression, and suddenly stood in my grandparents home in Burbank California. Roast beef dinner wafted out of the kitchen into the den while my family conversed in tones that resembled that of a Charlie Browns Peanuts to my young ears. Ciggarette smoke filled the air. My grandfather sat on the couch, and I on the huge circular rug. With the coffee table between him and I we shuffled playing cards for the next game of War.

Back to reality, I sit here and now truly realize the importance of the voices of baseball. Memories seemingly lost come into a clear crisp focus. I can almost taste my grandmothers roast beef with gravy over the potatoes, a side of green beans, and pound cake for dessert.
